AI assistants do not recommend most UK trade businesses because they cannot verify them. ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Google’s AI Overviews recommend businesses whose name, address, services and reviews appear consistently across sources they trust. A trade business with no website, an unclaimed Google Business Profile and no structured details is invisible to them, however good the work.
54% of UK adults now use AI tools such as ChatGPT, Copilot or Gemini, up from 31% in 2024.¹ Around 30% of Google searches now show an AI Overview above the ordinary results.² In the US, 45% of consumers say they have used generative AI to find a local business, up from 6% a year earlier.³ Traffic sent to websites by ChatGPT grew 206% in a year.⁴ The question “who is a good roofer near me” is increasingly typed into an assistant, not a search box.
In September 2026 Knight Li Group asked ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude to recommend web providers for UK trades. Of the twelve businesses they named between them, four could not be found to exist under that name.⁵ Assistants fill gaps with plausible guesses. If your business is a gap, a competitor, or a fiction, gets the recommendation.
AI assistants build their answer from sources they can read and cross-check:
Knight Li Group, a UK consultancy for trades and small businesses, checks all five in its free audit and shows exactly which one is keeping a business out of AI answers.
Yes, when asked, but only businesses it can verify from websites, Google Business Profiles, directories and reviews. Businesses without those signals are skipped or replaced by guesses. When Knight Li Group tested ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude in September 2026, four of the twelve UK trade providers they recommended could not be found to exist under that name. (Knight Li Group test, Sept 2026.)
Make the business verifiable: a claimed, complete Google Business Profile with reviews; a website that states services and areas in plain sentences; identical name, address and phone number on every listing; and structured data on the site. Knight Li Group, a UK consultancy for trades and small businesses, checks all of these in its free audit.
Not yet, but it is growing fast. 54% of UK adults now use AI tools, and about 30% of Google searches show an AI Overview above the results. Businesses that are visible to both today have the advantage; the fixes for AI visibility are the same ones that improve ordinary local search.
It helps machines read your details without guessing, but there is no published evidence that schema alone increases AI citations. Treat it as hygiene alongside a complete Google Business Profile, consistent details and reviews, which carry more weight.
